Why is this baby smiling?

My mother-in-law says they cannot smile yet. It looks like a smile. She is a week old in the picture.

Retrospective: William, in his second day; and Thomas at three days.

If that isn't a smile then I'd have to say that it is the sweetest expression ever on a baby's face.

She's smiling, definitely smiling. Adorable and I love the sweater (cardi?) too.

Yep I'd say that's a smile. Perhaps your Alexandra is the exception to the rule. She looks like she's having a wonderful dream. Or maybe she just had a really satisfying burp before nodding off!
What a sweet girl, and just look at those cheeks.

Thanks, all! I told my (knitter) mother-in-law the babe is smiling at her handiwork - that gave her pause to think.

That cheek tilted up there begs for a kiss.

It's had dozens. Today another from that mother-in-law (who keeps cropping up on this page) who was off to the airport to board a plane for Scotland.
