Rosella: the preserving company, not the bird.

Rosella was an early Melbourne cannery. The following link (that seems to be un-hyperlinkable) is a potted history of the Richmond company.

Rosella products included game soup, kidney soup and mutton broth and were far much more important than what today would be merely ‘convenience’ foods; in the pre-refrigeration era they provided reliable weatherproof sustenance. As an example, see in the link a letter of commendation from Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson.

  1. I recall your mentioning Rosella tomato soup sometime in the past. I thought it was a type of tomato rather than a brand name, but now I know!

  2. Rosella tomato soup with toast on the side and a melting slice of cheese on top was my comfort food choice when I went home from school for lunch as a child - an occasional treat only (going home for lunch not the soup).
